Shelter Island is located on eastern Long Island, Suffolk County, New York – nestled between the North and South Forks and is surrounded by Shelter Island Sound and Gardiners Bay. It can be reached only by boat or ferry – The North Ferry from Greenport and the South Ferry from North Haven. It is approximately 8,000 acres and approximately 27.1 square miles – more than 50% of which is water. It has vast areas of protected wetlands, marshlands and nature preserves. One-Third of Shelter Island is owned by the Nature Conservancy and is maintained in its natural state. Shelter Island was settled in 1652 and includes the Villages of Dering Harbor, Shelter Island Heights, Harbor View, Montclair Colony, Silver Beach, Westmoreland, Nostrand Parkway, Coecles Harbor, Smith Cove, West Neck Harbor and Ram Island.
