Let us answer by asking if you have the needed drywall repair tools? Some may already have them, and that is always a good starting point. To get the task done, you will need; A drywall saw, electronic stud finder, flexible knives, hacksaw, hammer, hand sander, inside corner knife, level, pry bar, sanding sponge, screwdriver, tape measure, utility knife, and ladder if the hole isn’t at your level. Sounds overwhelming if you don’t already own these tools and expensive.

Another thing to consider is just why is the drywall needing repair? If it is simply a hole needing attention more than likely a repair job is needed. Sometimes if water has been present mold can spread, and the problem may be beyond repair and need full replacing.

Repair Small Drywall Holes
If you’re simply repairing a small puncture left from a nail or screw that fix is relatively easy. Simply remove the offending accessory. Gently tap your hammer over the hole hard enough to create a dent, but not too hard as to make the hole bigger. Fill in the newly created dent with painters putty, making it as level as you can with the wall. After it has dried take your sanding sponge and lightly sand the area down. Spackle over with putty texture. Be sure after it is dry that it blends evenly with the wall and paint to match the color. This is actually harder than it sounds!
Major Drywall Hole Patch Repair
More serious holes require using a metal patch. After the hole has been prepped by cleaning the edges with the sanding sponge, wipe away dust and apply your patch according to manufacture instructions. Once completed, apply your drywall compound feathering the edges, once smooth let dry. Gently sand the area until smooth, the drywall application may have to be repeated until satisfied.
Tackling menacing holes involves using pieces of drywall the same thickness as the drywall already present. Cut a piece slightly larger than the hole. Score one side with a blade knife and snap it apart. Cut the back of the break line. This must be handled delicately as you don’t want to destroy the patch. Using a pencil draw an outline of the hole, be sure there are no electrical cords or plumbing lines before you cut. Use your drywall saw to cut the drawn area. Screw in two wooden boards behind the drywall, one on top and the other on the bottom of the hole. This keeps the patch from falling through. Screw on the drywall patch and add the mesh and drywall compound. Sand area and repeat the step if necessary, once satisfied, texture and paint over the patch job.
