Is Crown Molding Timeless in Springs, NY? Should it Match Baseboards?

There are many different home improvement ideas that are not only easy to do, they can also add beauty and value to your home. Replacing or adding hardware to your kitchen cabinets or bathroom is easy and can make a huge difference to the visual appearance of your home. Completing other home improvement projects around the home can also bolster your confidence to complete larger projects such as adding crown molding and upgrading or adding baseboards.

What is the Purpose of Crown Molding?

Crown molding is considered an architectural feature that not only finishes off the room, it is also beautiful and more importantly it will add additional value to your home. From a visual standpoint, crown molding can add a feeling of richness to the rooms in your house. If you are fortunate enough to live in an older property that has crown moldings from a different era you will have no need to be concerned that your home may be lacking the architectural detailing that makes a home unique. Have you ever wondered if crown molding would add that certain something to the rooms in your home? Concerned that the ceilings are too low or worried about expense? Or are you unsure of what size or style would work the best in your home? The experts at L.W. Winslow Painting Inc have provided the following helpful tips for selecting crown molding for your home:

Ceiling Height: The general rule of thumb for ceilings 10 feet tall or higher is to allow 1” of width for each foot of ceiling height.  For ceiling lower that 10 feet tall, consider the size of the room and the style of furnishings. For a room that has 8- to 9-foot ceilings, use simple moldings that are approximately 5” wide which work perfectly with contemporary style furnishings.

Cost: if you want the luxury of wide crown molding but you are concerned about the price, one solution is to use a narrower crown molding that has been paired with a narrow trim. By installing crown molding and placing the narrow trim up so that the top is 2” below the bottom of the crown molding and painting both the moldings and the trim including the strip of wall between them the same color will give the appearance that you have one wide piece of crown molding.

Style: Deeply stained wood moldings are often found in a more traditional style of home. If you have a contemporary style home and you want the warmth of stained wood, use a sleek flat profile of molding to achieve a modern look that is simple yet elegant.

Floor Baseboards

When making the decision to replace your baseboards, consider that stained wood is often more appealing than painted baseboards. Stained wood offers warmth and is a natural embellishment to practically any style of home décor. Stained baseboards are also more serviceable than painted baseboards and will hide scuffs and dings better, and when touched up, the scratches will blend in easier. You can select from a wide array of different colored stains that will match any color palette and add to the beauty of your home. If you have updated your décor by painting a room a specific color, adding baseboards painted in a color that complements the walls can really add a huge impact to the room. If your home has mini-baseboards and you don’t want the expense of replacing them, there are less costly ways to improve your living space with the luxury feel of upgraded baseboards. By purchasing additional trim, and painting both the old baseboard and new trim the same color, you can give the mini-baseboard height or added texture, such as a scroll design that is already incorporated into the new purchased trim.
