Paint Color Options for Basement with No Natural Light

Many people associate basements with darkness as the first characteristic.  Many basements suffer for want of light since many of them lack windows.   For your basement walls, you will want to choose a light color.  The time-honored standard is white; however, you can also have lovely, yellows, greens, blues, tans, grays, and better brighten the space.  Selecting a light shade is definitely a better option. You can also paint the ceiling a lighter shade of the wall color as your basement ceiling, a flat, bright white is a great option.  Adding a sense of airiness to the basement, the fact that it is lighter will make it feel higher up. 

Painting Masonry or Cinder Block Walls in Basement

Whether that be concrete or cinder block, basement walls are partially or wholly made of masonry in many instances. Sometimes called a block filler primer, begin with a masonry primer if you want to paint cinder block or concrete in your basement.  You can paint on afterwards as the seals up the pores in the masonry and creates a paintable surface.

Painting Humid Basements

Paint by itself will not fix the problem should your basement is prone to dampness.  Your paint will fail, and you will end up with mold or mildew issues, should you paint a wall that has periodic, or constant wetness.  To help you address whatever interior or exterior causes are behind the water, the best solution is to consider waterproofing. Remember that you need fresh air if you are painting your own basement.  You should wear a mask and blow a fan at the nearest door or window should you do any sanding during the preparation process.  Additionally, for painting your basement, you will want to choose low-VOC or zero-VOC products.

Gray:  Within the basement, gray paint is a trend that can be embraced all throughout your home.  Looking beautiful with neutral furniture, or bold and bright fabrics and décor, gray is a sophisticated paint color is quite versatile. 

Blue: Anyone who walks downstairs can be greeted a medium or even dark, navy blue can be ideal for enhancing a basement space and lifting the spirits.  With lighter trim and soft, neutral accents blue shades give off a calming effect and a pristine, timeless look.

Green:  Adding a rich green accent wall can really energize the space.  Brighter greens give off a sense of whimsy, dark greens give off a cozier feel, as well as saturated light greens offer calming effect.

White: Brighten up basements with white.  If you don’t use proper decorations or lighting, white can be uninviting or plain. Overhead lighting can brighten up a room in addition to the color in the carpet, in furniture fabrics, or décor.
